Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) is a test which is to see if your kidneys are working normally. If your kidneys are not able to remove urea from the blood normally, your BUN level rises. Different levels means patients are in different kidney disease’s stage. Now, let’s have a look!
The normal BUN level ranges from 3.5-7.1mmol/L (9-20mg/dL).
BUN levels for stages of kidney disease
Actually, blood urea nitrogen is just same to creatinine level, it won’t increase until half of renal function has been damaged. In the early kidney disease stage, BUN level can be in normal range. However, when GFR (glomerular filtration rate) decreases to 50%, BUN level will rise rapidly.
BUN<9mmol/L: CKD Stage 3 (Kidney failure compensatory period)
BUN >9mmol/L: CKD Stage 4 (Kidney failure decompensation period)
BUN>20mmol/L: CKD Stage 5 or Kidney Failure (uremia)
Through the above content, we can see that the higher BUN level, the more serious kidney damage. For kidney disease patients, the urgent thing is that how to lower or prevent High BUN level naturally.
