For people with Chronic Kidney Disease, they may complain that they have frequent urination at night. As it will affect patients’ sleep quality to a large degree, it is really necessary to learn about the following contents.
Kidneys work as “blood-cleaners” within our body, on the hand, they can help excrete excess metabolic products, toxins, etc out of the blood, on the other hand, they can help preserve useful substances like protein, red blood cells and so on. In addition, they are also responsible for the production of urine. However, when kidneys are damaged, they will not be able to work normally.
The urine output of ordinary people can be 1500-2000ml within 24 hours. And proportion of urine output during day and night is about 3-4:1, in general, the urine volume is less than 750ml at night.
Why CKD patients have frequent urination at night?
Causes of frequent urination at night in CKD patients can be explained from two aspects:
1. Due to a drop in kidney function, kidneys have to work harder at night to discharge metabolic products that should be excreted during the day.
2. The onset of urine involves two processes, namely glomerular filtration function and tubular reabsorption. In right condition, about 99% initial urine can be reabsorbed, however, the declined tubular reabsorption can be another cause of this abnormal sign.
Additionally, other factors can also lead to frequent urination at night, for instance, drinking large amount of water before going to the bed; usage of diuretics; endocrine disease, etc.
